Issue 4: November 2008
Word! is an arts-oriented online magazine written by and for teens. Smart, fun and rather quirky, we aim to entertain our readers, provide a niche for young writers and who knows, maybe even provoke a little thought.
Happy reading and thanks to everyone who made our fourth issue possible!

a spark,
is a snap,
is a note,
is a word.Welcome to Word!s first themed edition - the Creative Alley! We decided to devote one issue to poetry, photography, artwork, short fiction and basically anything the right side of our brains decided to spew out. What emerged was a kaleidescope of perspectives and artistic innovation, more insightful and talented than most would expect from a bunch of teenagers. The media and society in general seems more interested in our sex lives than our worldview, but that’s something that will have to change. Take the example of the recent US elections, where our generation defied the stereotype of apathy that had been thrust upon us and helped bring about a groundbreaking political shift.
This issue marks another first–Word!’s first writing contest, thought up by Word!’s Associate Editor, Alex Savilo. The basic premise behind this is that you have been given 200 words. Imagine these are the last 200 words you’ll ever have to say. What would you like to get out across? In a less extreme light, what’s the most important thing you can think of that you would like to communicate in 200 words? The winners of the contest have been published in this issue. Congratulations to all of you!
We’re planning two more themed issues in the near to distant future. Our February issue will focus on love, in commemoration of Valentine’s day. Tell us your stories and give us your take on love; they could be humorous, bitter, hopeful or nostalgic. Another upcoming issue, possibly our December one, will be about teens who are making a difference. It could be anything–having a successful band, being a social activist, or doing a Word! and starting your own publication. If you’re interested in having your story featured in Word!, contact word.webzine@gmail.com.
And now, it’s time to unlock Pandora’s second box, the one we knew she always had. So come on in, step inside - the Mad Hatter is waiting for you.
