Opinion: Pro-Choice Does Not Mean Anti-Life
by Sarah Mathews

I cannot write this.
That was the brick wall of rigid thought that I slammed into, time and time again, with every new attempt at this article. I did my research, taking care to investigate both sides of the issue with genuine consideration. I watched gruesome pro-life videos that use horrific images and emotional manipulation to convince women against having an abortion. I visited various blogs dedicated to the pro-choice and pro-life camps, each more polarizing than the last. I read the odd feminist article ranting for abortion and against oppressive Christian patriarchy.
And, working on the article at some ungodly hour in the middle of the night, I gave up, or came very, very close to it. Faced with a heartbreaking picture of a fetus with clasped, jelly-like hands and deep blue welts all over its body–burns from the saline used in some abortion procedures–I teared up and buried my face in my hands. It was unconscionable, I thought to myself, to consider writing an article that was essentially defending this.
The next morning, I sat at my laptop facing a looming deadline, armed with notes, copious amounts of coffee and more fresh conviction in my beliefs than I had the last night. But some nagging doubts still remained. Faced with an intensely sensitive moral and emotional issue; how would I go about addressing it? Should I argue logically, with case studies and pragmatism? What authority had I on this subject, anyway?
Precious little, as it turns out. These are my credentials:
I am eighteen years old, and female. I have known people who have had abortions, some reasonably close to me, others mere acquaintances. Some I completely sympathized with, some I could not help but judge. That being said, when it comes to my personal morality (and yes, I do believe morality operates on a fundamentally personal level), I think the process of willfully terminating a pregnancy is awful and agonizing, is desperately sad and ugly. Anyone who disagrees with this, please go to Google Images and search under “abortion.”
And I am pro-choice, and believe that, within certain reasonable restrictions, abortion should be legalized.
Saying this to some people is akin to waving a red flag at a bull–make that waving a blood-drenched red flag at a bull suffering from migraine and roid rage simultaneously. They turn purple in the face; they spew rhetoric. “That’s sick,” someone I once knew spat out, when faced with a devil’s advocate for legalizing abortion. “You’re saying that it’s okay for a mother to kill her own baby? It’s the right to life! What right has anyone to take that away?”
That someone was myself, age thirteen or fourteen. I find the idea of abortion, and the methods it entails, no less repulsive now than I did then. But I’d like to think I am more empathizing and more informed about the issues involved in the matter of terminating a pregnancy now. And I definitely have a broader understanding of the phrase “right to life” now. For me, the “right to life”, when it applies to human beings, is more than coiling DNA, more than mass cells and blastocysts, more than electrical impulses traveling along soon-to-be nerve endings. Doesn’t the right to life mean more than the right to merely exist?
Would you say that Darfurian refugees terrorized by the threat of genocide and mass rape enjoy the right to life, even though they are by all dictionary definitions, alive? Surely inherent in the right to life as we all understand it, is the right to live with autonomy and personal liberty, pursuing our own dreams and aspirations, making our own choices and living with their consequences. Pro-lifers wax furious and eloquent over the life of a fetus, and while I do not personally think that a fetus’s existence can be dismissed completely, I definitely believe that a mother’s rights, including her right to life, need to be considered and in many circumstances, given priority.
I want to share with you a few lines from a passionate, soul-stirring slam poem by the late, great Shannon Leigh.
She stands/ Hands shaking, lips moving, in prayer to a God that they tell her is not listening / Outside it is cold and the faces of her attackers line the cement walls like bathroom tiles/ She has come to kill her baby. That is what they say/ Holding pictures of cut-up stillbirths trying to tell her that the inside of her is shaped like us when/ Two days ago on the ultrasound the nurse showed her the gills/ She does not need anyone/ To tell her it is more than a clump of cells. At eight weeks, she already knows her baby’s colors/ Baby blue and bright pink like infant fireworks/ The shape of nose and eyes/ So familiar, this child/ Who would grow up to welfare and gunshots/ Asking why thunder seems so close and where Daddy is/She stands and prays– “Daughter, look away from this world and be with God/ There is no mercy in the streets for little girls and I could not protect you from monsters/ I was twelve when my mother failed me– They call her murderer. If I could go back four years, and talk to my red-faced, outraged fourteen year-old self, I would take her by the shoulders and say “Calm. Down. You’re not solving a thing here. Stop shouting, and start talking.” In both the pro-choice and pro-life camps there is far too much demonizing of the other side, not enough pragmatism or compassion. Some pro-choice advocates need to remember that not every pro-lifer is a Bible-belt-esque neoconservative out to deprive women of rights over their bodies. Pro-life activists could stand to reserve some compassion for the woman who is having part of her body cut out of her on an operating table; to stop the finger-pointing and name-calling that assumes every woman who terminates her pregnancy for non-medical reasons is, to quote one of the less venomous pro-life blogs I read, “a callous, murdering, selfish slut.” And you can be pro-choice believing that abortion is a terrible thing, but believing a government cannot make the hardest decision of a woman’s life for her. Being pro-choice does not mean being anti-life.
Reading over Matt’s concise, coolly reasoned defense of the pro-life position, I cannot help but compare it with some insecurity to mine, which at the moment seems to me an incoherent, emotional appeal. But looking down at my scribble-filled legal pad before I started, I’d decided that I could not argue my stance on this issue purely with information and cold logic, with rationality and statistics. What survey can quantify the desperation of a woman who does not want a baby, but is watching her belly swell with child, month by month? What statistics can ever convey the horror of a fetus’s tiny, mangled limbs in a dumpster? What mere facts or figures enable a bystander to comprehend the pain of growing up never feeling you were wanted-and believe me, children know.
In a world of exploding populations and horrific child abuse cases, society does not need more children. It does need more loved children; it needs more wanted children.
This is not merely an emotional or moral appeal. I’m sorry to generalize, but the statistics speak for themselves: the type of woman who needs and wants an abortion most is more likely to be unemployed, more likely to be on welfare. We cannot, literally and figuratively, afford more unwanted children in our society. Economist Steven Levitt, author of the bestselling Freakonomics, made an astounding, hugely controversial hypothesis–that the stark drop in the crime wave of the 90s that ran contrary to all conventional wisdom was because of Roe v. Wade and the legalization of abortion. Levitt had tried to come up with alternative explanations for this and found none that truly matched the statistics. The reasoning behind his abortion argument was that: (making this as brief as possible)
- The drop in crime coincided perfectly with when all the children who would not have been aborted if abortion had not been legalized through Roe. v. Wade, would have hit their late teens and early twenties.
- Studies show that the children of women denied an abortion “turned out to have been registered more often with psychiatric services, engaged in more antisocial and criminal behavior, and have been more dependent on public assistance.”
- Legalized abortion= fewer unwanted children. Unwanted children grow up more likely to commit crimes and be dependent on public welfare. Therefore, legalized abortion= safer society. Levitt himself acknowledged how unsettling the outcome of his work was and said, “you do not need to oppose abortion to be shaken by the notion that a private sadness can turn into a public good.”
Furthermore, the abolition of a woman’s right to abortion, when and if she wants it, amounts to compulsory maternity: tantamount to a form of rape by the government. The ability of a woman to have control of her body is critical to the issue of civil rights. Take away her reproductive choice and you step onto a slippery slope. If the government can force a woman to continue a pregnancy, what about forcing a woman to undergo sterilization?
I want to take this moment to address a few key platforms, pet peeves and common misconceptions associated with the pro-life movement:
- Abortion is not used as a form of contraception. Pregnancy can occur even with responsible contraceptive use. Only 8% of women who have abortions do not use any form of birth control, and that is due more to individual carelessness than to the availability of abortion
- Nearly all abortions take place in the first trimester, when a fetus cannot exist independent of the mother. As it is attached by the placenta and umbilical cord, its health is dependent on her health, and should not be regarded as a separate entity, as it cannot exist outside her womb. Only 1% of all abortions performed happen after the 20th week of pregnancy, that is, after the fetus can be considered viable. There is a lot of over-reporting of 2nd and 3rd trimester abortions.
- Yes, there are potential complications from an abortion, but not more than any standard surgical procedure. And yes, of course women are more emotionally fragile and vulnerable after an abortion, but the existence of what pro-life advocates call “post-abortion syndrome” has been soundly disproved as propaganda for their cause.
- 48.2% of abortions are procured by women with a family income of less than $30,000/yr. Women with family incomes less than $15,000 obtain 28.7% of all abortions. The average annual cost of raising a child, averaged out over the first 18 years of his life according to the USDA, is almost $12,000 a year. Do the math.
- There has recently been furor over whether tax dollars should be used to fund abortions for low-income women. If you’ll let me throw my own two cents in, it is blatant hypocrisy to take that stance based on pro-life beliefs, and then support tax dollars being sent by the millions to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Of course, none of this makes abortion right, or perfectly acceptable, or an easy choice. But it is even less right to bring unwanted children into lifelong suffering and to deprive women of their choice to have a baby voluntarily. Making abortion illegal is not the way to prevent more abortions from happening. If a woman feels she cannot have a baby under any circumstances, she will get that back alley abortion, drink that turpentine, jam that coat hanger into her soft inner tissue. It’s a lose-lose situation.
Laws and morals are not the same thing. The purpose of a law is to ensure the safety and security of everyone; morals are ideals that cannot and should not always be codified.
I think that we have been conned into fighting the wrong battle, all along. Our nationwide debates should not be about abortion in the first place, beyond setting up restrictions and regulations about the circumstances and timeframes they can take place. We should be fighting to provide better prenatal and neonatal care for low-income mothers, to disseminate more birth-control information in high-risk areas. To create programs to lift underprivileged kids out of the bleak, opportunity-less morass many of their lives descend into, where unsafe, uninformed sex becomes an escape route. To get rid of, for the love of all that is holy, abstinence only sex-education programs that have repeatedly been proven not to work, that make girls believe their boyfriends when they are told that they “cannot get pregnant their first time.” If we did this, we’d see abortion rates plummet and not have our civil rights impinged on at the same time.
Abortion is the tip of the iceberg, the shattering, clearly visible part, but I think that as a society, we ignore what is below the surface. If both pro-life and pro-choice activists set aside noisy theatrics for once and tried to take steps so that fewer women and girls found themselves in this desperate situation, we’d be better off as a society. Let’s all stop shouting. Let’s start thinking, start talking, start acting–with a willingness to compromise and a large capacity for compassion–because that, not moralizing, is what is most needed here.

Not that I’m totally impressed, but this is more than I expected when I stumpled upon a link on SU telling that the info here is quite decent. Thanks.

The claim that the world is overpopulated is firstly, a false one. Abortions and contraception are not needed to keep the world’s population in check. To say that society does not need more children is absolutely ridiculous.
<>
There is no such thing as an unwanted child. Millions of couples all over the world who are not able to conceive children are turning to adoption, to provide a child with a loving home. They want children. Every child born is a wanted and loved child, no matter the circumstances.
<>
Though the fetus cannot exist independently of the mother, it is still a separate entity. The body of the baby does not belong to the mother; it is it’s own. Is it not true that once a baby is born, it is still dependent on its mother? It needs its mother for food, nourishment, and love, and cannot exist without a mother for the first couple years of its life. Justifying an abortion in the first trimester because the baby is not viable is just like saying that a 1 year old can be killed because it cannot sustain itself independently.
<>
Firstly, we cannot claim that a child will be brought into a world of “lifelong suffering”. That is placing a condition on their life with no certainty of its being true. Children born out of rape cannot be blamed for how they were conceived, nor can you say their lives will be horrible. A friend of mine was adopted along with her brother, and they live normal, wonderful lives. To take away a person’s right to life on a condition that their life will not be as good as ours is purely selfish.
Lastly, making abortion illegal DOES NOT DEPRIVE the woman of her choice to voluntarily have a baby. SHE takes that choice from herself by having abortions. Abortions permanently scar the cervix and uterus and can make a woman incapable of having a baby when she “chooses to.”
Women make their choice by choosing to have sex when they do. Abortion is now a method of “back-up birth control” when contraceptives fail. Engaging in sexual intercourse is how a new life is conceived, period. Women know this beforehand, thus they made their choice already. Being pro-choice is fundamentally contra-life and contra-women, because in what way is being pro-choice pro-anything? It is detrimental to women in many ways; it is not liberating but scarring, both physically and mentally.

Jules I agreed with you on most everything but your one line, “Women make their choice by choosing to have sex when they do” is incredibly hurtful and insensitive to rape victims. Do you think a girl who was raped was making any sort of choice there? Don;t you think she’d have done everything in her power to stop that? Don’t be so quick to make outrageous statements without doing the math.
Having said, that, I am a born again follower of Jesus Christ. I hate abortion, it disgusts me, and I think that with God’s help anything is possible and that abortion is never NEEDED. However, in certain cases, such as rape victims, I personally would rather the child be born but would never judge the woman for aborting and would instead back up whatever her decision was and help her through it.
Finally, let me say at last this. A good friend of mine and her sister both could have and should have been easily aborted by their mother. She was judged incapable and unsuitable to raise children with the first kid, and after my friend was born they were both taken away from her. They were put into a horrible life situation, a childhood of abuse and neglect. And yet, somehow they both have managed to make it as capable human beings with hopes and dreams who are not adding to the crime rate. Are they messed up? Oh yes, but with God’s help and counseling my one friend is getting through her past pains.
My point with that story is this, not every unwanted child is destined to a life of crime, failure and/or misery. God loves all human beings, and He has a destiny for all of us. I believe that taking that away from ANYONE and putting the woman’s life above the child’s is purely selfish. I cannot blame that woman and I certainly do not, but it’s still being selfish, just with very good reasons to do so.
As for the article I was impressed and I liked it. I wholeheartedly agree that we should all put our petty arguments, reasonings, and pasts behind and get to work doing whatever positive things that will help reduce the amount of unwanted pregnancies out there and also to provide care and assistance to all unwanted children who ARE born.
Lastly, God has a destiny for every child and for all of us. But Satan has one as well. I personally have opted for God’s through accepting Jesus Christ, and I would love to invite you to as well. If you don’t that’s fine and I understand, but I pray you’ll at least consider it.
God bless,
~Follower of Christ

The author of wordwebzine.com has written an excellent article. You have made your point and there is not much to argue about. It is like the following universal truth that you can not argue with: It’s possible to find a soulmate on the internet… but not within a 3000 mile radius Thanks for the info.

China and Russia put the blame on some screwed up experiments of US for the earthquake that happened in Haiti.
Chinese and Russian Military scientists, these reports say, are concurring with Canadian researcher, and former Asia-Pacific Bureau Chief of Forbes Magazine, Benjamin Fulford, who in a very disturbing video released from his Japanese offices to the American public, details how the United States attacked China by the firing of a 90 Million Volt Shockwave from the Americans High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) facilities in Alaska
If we can recollect a previous news when US blamed Russia for the earthquake in Georgio. What do you guys think? Is it really possible to create an earthquake by humans?
I came across this article about Haiti Earthquake in some blog it seems very interesting, but conspiracy theories have always been there.

My friend in Nebraska has asked me to help her with her laptop (i live in AZ ,she used to live here too). She downloaded a bunch of viruses disguised as a virus danger warning from the main OS (ironic huh?) all I know to do is to take it to a computer store like best buy or get a free anti virus software. Any ideas on things that could help? by the way the thing that did it i think was called the antyvirus software fyi. santoramaa

This might be a bit off-topic but I believe there are a lot of smokers here on wordwebzine.com. I decided to find a good manufacturer of e-cigarettes. I’m done with paying so much for normal smokes.A friend recommended G Smoke According to their website this is how they described their product:
“Green Smoke offers quality Electronic cigarettes with disposable cartridges that produce the highest smoke volume in the industry. With a collection of flavors and nicotine levels, Green Smoke’s™ patented technology offers convenience and exhibit performance that is unmatched. G Smoke products have been independently tested for safety.”
I’m thinking of buying them. Anyone else have experience with this e-cigarette?

I just discovered SatelliteTV on my PC! Ultra cheap at only $50 once off to get the software and an account on the Internet. I get more channels(in HD I might ad) than I get on cable so tomorrow I reckon I’m going to cancel my cable subscription. Thought I’d share this with you guys, worth to check out.
