Poetry: “Change”

I’m angry.
Angry that this happened.
He was so young.
Angry that they changed.
They promised.
Angry that I stand here
Surrounded by hearts
That have stopped beating…
Terrified that often
I can’t even hear my own.
I’m angry
That I have a voice
Yet I shut my mouth in fear.
I hear
But never listen.
Come near
But never reach
Far enough to change
Long enough to care.
I stare.
Looking never seeing.
Talking never being.
Words fall like rain
But where is my thunder?
The anger builds
And pictures play
Of pain
Engraved
Within my mind.
They lied.
She hurt.
They killed.
He died.
They left me here.
They still don’t care.
He stole my heart.
She fell apart.
But what have I done?
There is good.
There is bad.
We are both.
They both find their way
Around in our hearts
Avenging the pain
And fueling the joy.
A battle within.
Our hearts make the choice
Of whom we let win.
We say what we want
Then do what we don’t.
But I…
I have hope
That God changes hearts.
Bad can turn good.
Our voice can be heard.
Just stop.
Listen.
See.
Be.
Dear God
Change us.
Change me.
