99 Problems And A Drink Ain’t One

As a college student, you step out of your own shell and open your mind to a broad new spectrum of not only academics and existing interests but also issues and politics. This was stuff you left alone before because it was for the grown-ups to deal with, while you were busy scrambling through to ace the pre-calculus tests and buffing your extra-curricular and volunteer activities for those college apps. As a college kid, however, your opinion matters, especially in important matters. Like lowering the drinking age.
It seems weird to be able to think of it as a law that prevents underage drinking by setting an age that is deemed appropriate to start drinking above, seeing as how the government only has the power to apprehend you only if you are caught purchasing alcohol. Drinking it, apparently, is not a crime if someone else has bought it for you. Sure, this law is enforced in clubs by making sure those who aren’t above drinking age can be clearly identified. This hasn’t actually brought down the number of people trying to score a few drinks while being underage, just the number of people of people who are successful in doing so. While it may sound like it’s achieved its purpose, there is a slight difference. Under jurisdiction, and the formal law, there are fewer crimes being committed. However, the whole point of laws in society is basically to steer our thought processes into right, moral grounds. So, while the laws are effectively reducing the number of people committing the crime of buying drinks while underage, they’re not actually reducing underage drinking.
Personally, I believe the choice to drink, whether it be in a social capacity with friends at a club or party, or simply relaxing and watching TV while having a chilled beer, should be something that you decide for yourself because you like it or have acquired a taste for it. I get that some people like having a few drinks to let loose and free themselves from inhibition or initial awkwardness at a social situation. Use your discretion to decide how much alcohol you consume. If you know you can’t hold a drink, make the smart decision and not have as many drinks so as to pass out head first into the carpet. Nothing is as crappy as doing something out of peer pressure, and not ending up liking it but doing it all the same just to fit in. So, before I explain my stance on the drinking laws, let me explain my stance on drinking itself. As long as you don’t (1) leave bodily fluids on the expensive carpet (2) have the EMT come with the stomach pump ready at 3 AM or (3) be a pain in the ass by lolling over everyone accompanied by idiotic ramblings being yelled out, drinking is fine. As long as you know your limits.
Which brings me to the point – what allows us to know the right age for the consumption of alcohol? What kind of special wisdom are we supposed to have acquired in order to be able to purchase alcohol? In the United States, most states have the legal drinking age to be 21, while you need to be 18 to vote. What gives? Voting certainly requires a greater amount of logic, thought and consideration than downing a few mai tais. As a voter, you need to be a responsible one. Meaning, not only should you have formulated an informed stance on the issues your candidates support, but try and gain a fuller understand the issues that don’t necessarily affect you that the candidates support. These people that you’re voting for, they’re going to run a country… which means, for the next term, they will be in charge of the social, judicial and economic affairs of the country, most of which are bound to affect you and your quality of life. A weighty decision, yet one we are ready to make at the age of 18. Makes sense, since most people have obtained the necessary formal education to allow themselves to be more fully informed about those issues that are involved in the electoral process. But if we are ready to make a decision that could change the way a nation progresses, we can’t buy a few drinks?
Voting’s not the only decision we make when we’re 18. You can join the US Army when you’re 18. If the decision to start drinking alcohol can affect your life, then it’s pretty safe to say that the decision to undertake the most perilous job ever might slightly affect your life too. I might be glib about it, but I’m pretty sure more soldiers have lost their lives in battle than accidents due to alcohol poisoning or drunk driving. We also make the decisions regarding our higher education, and the whole reason we take those decisions seriously is because they affect our whole lives. So, some pretty tough decisions being made, yet a relatively simple privilege is being excluded.
It has been argues that lowering the drinking age will affect us adversely because it will encourage more drinking among teenagers. On the flip side, lowering the drinking age ensures more people stay on the right side of the law while partaking in distractions of the alcoholic variety. I must say, as a non-drinker by choice, I feel mostly apathy for this issue, but if I had to pick a choice, I’d say… lower it.
Teenagers may be impressionable, but only up to a limit. Peer pressure works when you really want to try something out but can’t because of parental or religious or lifestyle limitations. When something stands against your logic or judgment, or even morals and principles, then no amount of coaxing could make you change your mind. Kids who’re drinking under peer pressure will be drinking because they really want and are looking for that little nudge to get the courage to try it out, so lowering the age won’t affect them adversely. Kids who aren’t drinking are pretty much impervious to peer pressure and are choosing to not drink because of personal choice. The lowering of the drinking age shouldn’t affect them. Kids who are already drinking like pros can now do it under the auspices of the law. All is good.
But what about the kids on the brink? The ones whose choice hangs on the drinking age? Here’s my $0.02… these kids aren’t exactly on the brink. While they may have lack of resources for obtaining the alcohol, they might lack discretion or good judgment, something much more important when consuming alcohol. Possibly these kids are already having alcohol, just not buying any, and it’s a fact that when you’re the one buying alcohol (because that stuff is expensive), you’ll be much more wary about its consumption.
According to National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism’s Underage Drinking Research Initiative, three-fourths of 12th graders, more than two-thirds of 10th graders, and about two in every five 8th graders have consumed alcohol. This colossal mess can be attributed not to legislation but to the mindset of the people. Adolescents at this age are uncomfortable in their own skin, and perceive the need to be viewed as “mature”, or more grown-up than they really are. What they see adults doing in social situations is essentially drinking, mostly inappropriate amounts of alcohol. This is what they think they need to do to feel as if they’re more socially advanced than their peers. So, this pretty much means that the psychology of social interactions needs to be changed. While the drinking age can be lowered, and you can have a drink to be social, if you’re completely dependent on alcohol to galvanize you social interactions then there’s something seriously wrong with you.
There’s no guarantee that wisdom comes with age, so by simply raising the age to arbitrary age like 21, I’d say lower it to 18. If the basic wisdom to choose your country’s leader comes then, then so should the discretion to drink, by the same logic. By keeping things on the right side of law, it removes the element of the “forbidden fruit” from underage drinking, which in turn would probably ease off peer pressure. By making anyone above the age of 18 able to buy alcohol, “underage” drinkers would have the opportunity to ease their craving for alcohol so that the next time they attend the frat party, they don’t spend the rest of their night with their head in the toilet because of a bad spell of binge-drinking. And you want a really twisted way of thinking about it… just because people are old enough to vote doesn’t mean that they will.

And I definitely agree. I’ve been exposed to alcohol at a very young age, and surprise surprise, I am NOT an alcoholic. I sometimes have a drink or two at social gatherings, but I never go overboard. Personally, the legal drinking age doesn’t affect me at all. And so lowering it will also not change my drinking behaviour. I think I was lucky to be raised in an environment where drinking is not forbidden up to a certain age. Because when something is forbidden, it makes it seem more desirable to some. It’s depressing to see some people getting drunk after they turn 19 (the legal drinking age in Canada) just because they can. And they talk about alcohol as if it’s the greatest thing in the world.
