Dear Disney, What Happened?

by Sarah Mathews

Disney, Disney, give me an answer, do.

Ridiculously clichéd and unimaginative scripts and plots. A slew of mediocre child actors who seem to have been chosen more for their attractive appearances than for any acting talent whatsoever. Said actors going on to pursue singing careers, recording some excruciatingly bad music in the meanwhile.  Corporate greed milking every last successful Disney film dry when it comes to merchandising. Little girls dressing like streetwalkers in imitation of Hannah Montana. I suppose all of us eventually come to a point where we look at our government, our hometown, or something that we have grown up with, like Disney TV and films, and sadly shake our heads and say, “Things sure ain’t what they used to be”.  All the same, I’m pretty sure I shouldn’t be feeling this way for a long while. Certainly not at seventeen; my own childhood is just behind me.

One can appreciate Disney’s dilemma. On one hand, they need to keep espousing traditional American family values, as well as keep up with a fast-changing era. Most importantly for them, they need to make Big Profit, and their current business strategy definitely seems to be doing that for them. Analysts estimate that the Disney cable movie,”High School Musical” has generated $1 billion in operating profits to Disney over the past two years. A cable movie, mind you.  Disney expects retail sales for franchises catering to tweens - kids between the age of 9 and 14 - to hit $400 million worldwide this fiscal year. Clearly, they’re doing something right. I know very few children who don’t know the names of most Disney Channel actors. Or buy film merchandise; read, throw tantrums until their parents buy it for them. There were Hannah Montana tickets that sold for $2,500 during her national tour. I remember knowing the names of about 5 Disney stars, if as many, and it took a lot of arm-twisting for my eight-year-old self to get my parents to buy me a pink Disney Princesses bag.

Toto, I don’t think we’re in the Lizzie McGuire era anymore.

I would give the folks at Disney a thumbs-up for their great marketing and business strategy, except that the resulting popularity/hysteria it has spawned among tweens has definite drawbacks, from many perspectives. Today’s Disney Channel, with its brigade of dolled-up mini-superstars, promotes vanity and superficiality. You rarely see an unattractive child on a show, unless he or she is “the loser” or the uncool kid at school. Almost none of the Disney Channel stars have glasses or braces, or appear onscreen without looking red-carpet ready. Girls 13 and 14 act in faces caked with makeup (even in scenes when they’re supposed to be sleeping) and wear clothes that would be at home on 18 year olds.  This sends a clear message to young children, young girls in particular; that they have to be pretty, dress fashionably and wear make-up to be accepted.

Moreover, Disney and its young stars demonstrate and promote a worrying level of sexuality for a corporation that claims to be family friendly. Let’s attempt to separate some of the personal decisions of the Disney stars (Cough. Vanessa Hudgens nude pictures. Miley Cyrus topless Vanity Fair photo spread. Cough) from the company, who, let’s face it, can’t control everything its stars do.  Let us consider, for example,  He Said She Said, a song from Ashley Tisdale (of Suite Life and High School Musical fame)  that played on Disney Channel. The video for the song is embedded.

Ashley Tisdale, Vanessa Hudgens and Miley Cyrus are held up as role models for young girls today. Be concerned. Be very concerned. Furthermore, among Disney merchandising geared toward teen and preteen girls, you’ll find makeup and clothes that certainly seem too sexualized for tweens. It’s gotten social and cultural commentators concerned enough to publish books like The Lolita Effect: The Media Sexualization of Young Girls and Stop Dressing Your Six Year Old Like A Skank. It also leads one to question the double standard of American society, promoting abstinence-only sex education on one hand and on the other hand, propagating sexualization among children too young to know any better.

Many people would agree that Disney has changed—and not for the better.  But in some respects, positive change is long overdue. Disney has long battled allegations of racism and racial stereotyping in its portrayal of ethnic characters. Take, for example, a few lines from a song in Aladdin, ”I come from a land, from a faraway place, where the caravan camels roam, where they cut off your ear if they don’t like your face; it’s barbaric, but hey, it’s home.” This was met with protests from the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee and Disney made changes to the lyrics, but left the last two lines as they are.  Although they seemed to be getting more culturally sensitive with films like Pocahontas and Mulan, they seem to have regressed with their latest venture.

The Princess and The Frog: An American Fairy Tale
was supposed to be the first animated Disney film that featured a black princess and thus was eagerly anticipated by many as a big step forward for the corporation. However, the whole project had to be pulled back to the drawing board this summer amidst accusations of racial sterotyping. A musical set in the Jazz Age, the film was supposed to feature Maddy, a black chambermaid employed by a white Southern debutante. Maddy was to be helped by a voodoo priestess fairy godmother to win the heart of a white prince, after he rescued her from the clutches of a voodoo magician. Anyone with a knowledge of the turbulent history of race in America would raise an eyebrow at that plotline.

Young children are easily influenced and extremely perceptive about subtle messages present in media. Cultural biases, sexism, the portrayal of sexuality as desirable, are all things they pick up and see as acceptable. At the risk of sounding preachy and didactic, we need to be more responsible about what messages kids today receive and set a standard for entertainment targeted towards them.

Lastly, let’s ignore values for a second and simply talk quality. Most shows on the Disney Channel are have crude, unsophisticated scripts and bad acting. They operate solely on clichés and incredibly formulaic plots. Furthermore, the music its young stars churn out is godawful, for the most part. Incidentally, Disney has had a history of success with its animated ventures with Pixar (Finding Nemo, Shrek, Ice Age and WALL-E,  to name a few) but its own shows and movies, with the exception of a few, have been lackluster. If there’s anything Disney should learn from Pixar, it’s that taking risks and innovation pays off big. It also gets you warmer critical reception—and fewer scathing articles.
